Leader Magazine
WINTER 1962.
SOCCER NOTES.
Fortunately it is not the tendency of Junior Leaders in the Football Club to assume that being knocked out of the Army Challenge Cup means the end of the season. We have lost our priority, but not the enthusiasm to complete the season, playing and winning as many games as possible. In many ways the club is undergoing a period in which team spirit and determination can play an important part in attaining our original aims. These aims were: firstly, to improve our knowledge and understanding of the game; secondly, to win as many honours as we could, and finally to instil a club spirit second to none. There are no excuses offered for our failure to retain the Army Cup. We were beaten by a side who were better on the day. However, we have learned that failure to turn opportunities into goals, and inability to improvise and adapt ourselves to changing conditions can have the worst possible effect on the result of a game.
Many of our players are now maturing into footballers of real class, and special mention should be made of our captain J/Cpl. Smith, J/Pte. Williams, J/L/Cpl. McBirney, J/Pte. Jamieson and J/Pte. Grace, all of whom should be destined for higher honours in the game. Others are very closely on their heels, and competition for a first team place becomes fiercer at each game. Our Mid-Wales Youth Challenge Cup Competition towards the end of the season brings us to look forward to a season full of varied fixtures which demand that we all reach the standard set by the more senior players.
Finally, we should like to record our appreciation to those Permanent Staff and Junior Leaders who have often given up their precious time to come along and support the team. We shall endeavour to repay your loyalty by providing skilful and entertaining football for your enjoyment.
