It has been known for some years that the number of cases of cancer of the lung has been increasing. Evidence from many countries indicates that the increase is associated with tobacco smoking, particularly in the form of cigarettes. It is the aim of this article to make known the evidence which suggests that smoking is harmful.
Consider the following facts from a statement by the Medical Research Council:
  1. In 1940 there were 5,303 deaths from lung cancer. In 1961 there were 25,288 deaths.
  2. Among males the disease is responsible for 1 in 18 of all deaths.
  3. Nineteen inquiries in seven countries agree that the majority of lung cancer victims are smokers.
  4. The evidence from these investigations suggests that of life-long heavy cigarette smokers, 1 in 8 will die from lung cancer. For non-smokers, the corresponding figure is approximately 1 in 300.
  5. A long period may lapse between cause and effect, maybe even 20 years.
Knowledge of the cause of lung cancer is still incomplete, but it is steadily growing. Many possible reasons to explain the large increase in the incidence of the disease have been advanced, but so far none has proved an adequate explanation save that cigarette smoking is the principle factor in the cause of the disease.
