Leader Magazine
SUMMER 1962.
ATHLETICS NOTES.
A great deal of enthusiasm and hard training has, so far, made this season's athletics very successful and rewarding. We began the season with only a couple of last term's athletes and a large number of young boys, the vast majority of whom are under seventeen years of age and will be with the Regiment next year, which fact holds great promise for he future.
Our first match was held on a cold day towards the end of May when we competed against the Infantry Junior Leaders' Battalion. Despite the weather conditions, some very good performances were recorded. The Infantry boys just managed to beat us in a very good competition.
Our next match was against H.M.S. Conway at Llanfair. Conway are old rivals from seasons past and we can always look forward to good competition, which indeed they gave us. This time however we managed to turn last season's defeat into a well fought victory. Two weeks later we again managed to beat them, this time on our home ground. In the meantime we had taken part in the Western Command Championships, where we were again beaten by the Infantry who despite a great deal of improvement on our part, proved much too strong for us in the track events and had a comfortable victory. We did, however, turn the tide on the Junior Leaders Regiment, Royal Artillery, and beat them into second place.
We are now looking forward to the Army individual Championships at Aldershot and the team championships at Pirbright. all to be held at the beginning of July and towards the end of the month. Eight of the boys will be representing the Country in the Welsh National Junior Championships.
In the next edition of the "Leader" we hope we shall have some encouraging results to record.
