SUMMER 1962. |
CRICKET NOTES. |
REGIMENTAL TEAM |
The cricket season so far has been one of mixed results. We were unfortunate in meeting the Infantry Junior Leaders in our very first match in the first round of the Western Command Competition. This was due to the fact that we had to cancel a couple of previous fixtures due to bad weather. However, in spite of this, we were only beaten by three wickets. Since then we have proved that we have the elements for a very good team, beating the R.A. Junior Leaders very decisively, mainly due to a very fine innings of 64 not out by J/L/Cpl. Smith, who also incidentally bowled five balls and took two wickets for no runs. |
In the other rounds of the Competition we have only managed to draw, but in each case in our favour. Against the A.A.S. Chepstow, we declared at 108 for 7, with Browning knocking up a competent 27. They replied with 95 for 8, with McKenzie taking 5 for 47 and Reed 3 for 24. |
We then played the R.A. Junior Leaders and as a result of bad fielding and dropped catches on our part they scored 141, of which Newman scored 55. Cameron took 3 for 20 in this match and J/L/Cpl. Haffenden had a very good match by taking 4 for 28 and scoring 60 in our reply of 124 for 5. |
We have some interesting matches yet to be played, and we hope to do well, although our batting appears to be suspect in the middle order. Our openers Smith and Mitchell, have always appeared confident, and we have a surfeit of quick bowlers, all of whom have produced good results at .times. The most consistent have been Cameron and Reed, ably supported by McKenzie,Browning and, on occasions, Glister and Beaton. Of the spinners, both Gard and Haffenden are improving with each match. Swinson has kept wicket competently, but would do better if he were prepared to put more effort and concentration into his keeping. |
SECOND XI |
Our 2nd XI have also had a mixed season to date. The team has consisted of all the members of the Cicket Club in turn, so that, although not always providing the strongest team, it will mean that everyone should have played at least twice by the end of the season. They have been ably led by J/Cpl. Dutton, whose task has not been easy, having five or six new players in his team every match. |
PERMANENT STAFF XI |
The Permanent Staff started the season with an impressive fixture list, and, on paper, a very strong side, most of whom had represented their Regiments or Corps. However, although most systems were 'go', the Tonfanau weather was not, and three of the early fixtures had to be cancelled. |
In the first game against Bangor Town, we lost by seven wickets. Lt. Ross, in a 'period of glory', was our top scorer with seven runs. Undismayed, we proceeded to our turn for triumph, when we proved to be too strong for R.M.P. Provost Company, Chester, whom we met in the second round of the Western Command Knock-out Competition. The scores: A.A.J.L.R. 327 for 7 declared, R.M.P. 28. It is rumoured that members of the team exercise great care when driving into the Chester area, especially Lt. Neal who scored 176. |
Capt. Temporal, Capt. Mitchell, Capt. Wilmott and Lt. Ross have played for Western Command and Lt. Dawson has been selected for Merionethshire. |
