Members of 'A' Company on an Adventure Training Exercise
by J/Sgt. Baines 'B' Company.
Adventure Training at the best of times is, we all agree, an arduous section of training. When the weather is as bad as it often is when we set out for a day in the hills, it becomes more a test of endurance and stamina than anything else.
Although the hills are steep and flat ground is rare, the boys look forward with great anticipation to the day when they pit their skill and strength against the rugged terrain that nature has provided.
This sort of training is becoming more important as probable conditions of warfare change. It seems likely that in any future war, the individual soldier may be called to fend for himself to a greater degree than at any time in the past. This makes the living-out we do on our award schemes very important training for us.
By award schemes I mean those which, as an added incentive, the Duke of Edinburgh has sponsored and devised. In these boys can train to, and pass tests of three varying standards, Bronze, Silver and Gold. This year this Regiment will be represented at Buckingham Palace by boys who have reached the Gold standard and are to receive the badge and certificate personally from H.R.H. the Duke of Edinburgh.
