Camping At Cae-du.
Frank writes;
I never served any time at Tonfanau, hopefully that doesn't make me a bad person. I do however seem to have an affinity with any old MOD sites, like WWII airfields, ROC posts, bunkers, etc. I'm not sure why but I always tend to get a feeling of loss when I stand on the now empty ground that so many good people had trodden. A few years ago in the month of April I visited the Somme, to pay my respect to the fallen, and again the feeling of tremendous loss was with me. A good shrink would find the answer I'm sure, best off not knowing...
So back to the plot this week, the 11th April 2006 to be exact, I pitched my small trusted tent (gales and rain for the entire three days) just a few miles from Tonfanau at a little campsite called Cae-du. On the 12th I set off on my mission to revisit Tonfanau after coming across it with a friend a few years ago but now armed with my camera.
Having looked at your excellent collection of photos of Tonfanau it is truly amazing how very little still remains. This is why your web site is so important, it records the past for the people of the future to see what was.
I sometimes wonder if such places should be preserved.. I'm sure the TIME TEAM will visit it in 500 year trying to understand what was TONFANAU CAMP.
