After The AAJLR At Tonfanau Closed
In 1972 Idi Amin expelled most of the asian population from Uganda who were actually UK Citizens.
This caused an obvious housing problem for the UK Government. The decision was made to send them to various unoccupied MOD camps around the country. As Tonfannau had been used as a T/A camp it was well equipped to accomodate the incomers.
You will all remember the girder bridge leading into the camp. After AAJLR closed, a local farmer bought the bridge but left it in place in order to move his livestock around. When the rumours started that the asian families were to move in, the farmer made (slow) preparations to dismantle his bridge. When the inevitable Civil Servants from MOD arrived to find part of the bridge missing the farmer produced his bill of purchase.
Agreement was reached for the farmer to repair his bridge and for the visitors to use it on the understanding that the he could charge rental for the use of the bridge whilst the camp was occupied. The local rumour was a rental of £1000 per month was hastily agreed. |
