SUMMER 1965. | ||||||
HOBBIES ROUND-UP. | ||||||
The year has seen the closure of several notable hobbies. The radio enthusiasts no longer have to explain the spelling and location of Tonfanau to mystified Portuguese; the model cars have buzzed round their last lap and the Leader has thereby lost an advertisement; weightlifters have ceased to grunt, chess players have been checkmated and fencing has been run through.
Among the survivors there is talk of a merger. Neither Model Boats not Aeromodelling could agree on the other's jurisdiction over model hovercraft, so they decided on a joint project. A prototype was flown, or sailed, or whatever the term is. The Queen Mary, last seen by our reporters as a few odd planks roughly nailed together, his been completed. Major Balcombe has had to admit that the best flight this year came from a 3s. 6d. kit.
Sailing has suffered from unsuitable weather, from flat calms over a 3 knot tide to force 6-7 winds. However, one or two promising helmsmen have appeared, everyone found the keel-boat racing off the Isle of Wight a valuable experience, and it is hoped to send a team to the Boys' Units' Regatta at Portland in July. Major D.G. Bacon, RA, was invited to the Army Trials off the Isle of Wight and was well to the fore until he was rammed in gale force winds.
At the time of writing Football is having its summer break. Last season was not one of the best but there were many hard matches and several good wins. In the Western Command Junior League we finished about halfway, having the distinction of holding the better teams, but often failing to make our mark against those nearer the foot of the table. In the Welsh Youth Cup fortunes were better and several good teams fell before us, but because of Christmas leave we were unable to play the next round and had to scratch. Many established players are graduating at the end of the summer term, and in fact there will be only four of last season's team left. The hobby is all out for fresh blood, so if you count yourself a football player, come forward and help to make this last season of Regimental football the best on record.
The Judo hobby has moved quarters. The new dojo actually has a changing room and is sparrow-proof, waterproof and generally conducive to more comfortable agony. Following a visit to Swansea Samurai club several yellow and orange belts appeared, and many beginners have made good progress. Mr. Stead's own progress has been an inspiration to all. Despite lack of serious opposition he has obtained his brown belt.
The term started well in the Cricket hobby with the Inter-Company competition. This ended without a definite result: A, B and C Companies tied for first place with two wins each. The Regimental XI shows promise, but has been plagued by the usual crop of cancelled matches, J/Pte Prior (C) J/Gnr Johnson (A) have shown good form with the bat, and J/Pte Sharpe (A) has bowled steadily. Unfortunately the side has been let down by its fielding, and too many runs have been scored against us by batsmen who have been dropped early in their innings. We had a bye in the first round of the Army Junior Cup, and beat JTR Rhyl by 8 wickets in the second round. We are now waiting for the draw for the third. Results: Caersws 66 (Hawkins, 6 for 28) AA 67 for 5, won by 5 wickets; AA 97 Towyn GS 46 for 9 (Harness, 6 for 14) drawn; JTR Rhyl 44 (Sharpe 5 for 12) AA 45 for 2, won by 8 wickets; IJLB 98 AA 91 for 6 (Prior 48) drawn; RAF Cosford 144 (Penfold 4 for 45, Cuff 4 for 42) AA 88 for 6 (Prior 55) drawn.
The Scottish Dancing Team has given a series of displays including performances for Aberdovey Music Society, the Tal-y-llyn Railway Centenary celebration, Butlin's Holiday Camp, Shrewsbury summer show and the Isle of Man Highland Games. The team has appeared on BBC TV and ITV and recently performed for and were introduced to HRH the Duke of Edinburgh and Sir John Hunt at a youth rally at Welshpool. The team wishes to thank Major Playfoot, MC, RAEC, Mrs. Moore, WVS, Major Griffiths, RAPC, Capt Best, ACC, Capt Paterson, RA and the MT staff and Mr. Shotton, who have been most helpful at all times. The hobby now looks forward to another successful winter season and the resumption of mixed Scottish Country Dancing classes at Towyn Grammar School.

H.R.H. the Duke of Edinburgh discusses the intricacies of running a dancing team with Captain A.C. Little, RAEC, at a youth rally in Welshpool. The piper, J/Pte Paterson of 'D' Company is on the right of the picture.
Despite the reduction in numbers and the increasingly difficult financial position, it is to be hoped that hobbies will continue until the end. Their true value lies in the fact that the greater the effort made, the greater is the reward - though not in visible honours.
