Falaise Platoon in action during the Rhyl Cup.
by J/CSM KERSHAW, `A' Company.
The termly inter-platoon competition, based on the application of military training, had this term a new trophy, the Rhyl Cup, presented by Lt. Col. J.S.G. Walenn, M.C. and all ranks the Junior Tradesmen's Regiment, Rhyl.
The day of the competition was welcomed by overcast skies, and slight drizzle. Undeterred by inclement weather, we marched off to face the first inspection, and then to the first check point, where there was no problem as it was only a time check. We then set off on the cross country course to the Dysynni, where we were confronted with a first aid problem, which we did comparatively easily, losing only a few valuable marks.
A short march across Morfa Flatts brought us to the initiative problem, which consisted of getting a barrel filled with water across what was supposed to be a bottomless pit, using only a few metal bars and all the initiative Falaise could muster. With few anxious moments, we succeeded in crossing the pit and gained 45 marks for our efforts. The radio problem followed and then we continued our march to the open range, where we were inspected again before proceeding to the to the firing points. We fired at figure 11 targets and falling plates, and did well to gain many valuable marks, with bonus marks for all live rounds returned.
Now came a part that everybodyhad been looking forward to, which was an elaborate meal provided by the cooks. As we relaxed and enjoyed the food, we waited anxiously for the results, and our efforts were rewarded when we discovered that we had won the competition, with Alamein second and Dettingen third, to become first holders of the Rhyl Cup.
The winning Falaise Team was: J/Sgt. Kershaw, J/Bdr. Shuker, J/L/Cpl. Humpleby, J/L/Cpl. Day, J/L/Cpl. Hewitt, J/Tpr. Knowles, & J/Ptes. Fomes, Hoyle and Mould.
