SUMMER 1962. |
FOREWORD. |
by Colonel T. LASH, O.B.E. |
It is with pleasure that I accept the Editor's invitation to write the Foreword for the Summer number of Leader. Although a tribute to the former Commandant, Colonel J. F. Lake, M.C., was included in the last edition, I would like to place on record my own appreciation of all that he has done and achieved here during the past three years. I am fortunate indeed to inherit command of such a lively, happy and efficient unit. I shall do my best to keep it so. |
The Summer Term might be expected to be a period of kind weather and sunshine, but to date rain and cloud has been the general order of the day. None the less, outdoor hobbies and activities of all kinds have continued unabated. As I write, twenty-seven Junior Leaders have just completed the Duke of Edinburgh's Gold Award expeditions and results are awaited. Both Permanent Staff and Junior Leaders' cricket teams are managing to carry out a full programme of matches in spite of the weather. The Athletics team has not been without success. As the result of being runners-up to the Infantry Junior Leaders' Battalion in the Western Command inter-unit team competition, we shall be sending a team to compete in the inter-boys' unit finals at Pirbright, later in the term. |
The Tug-of-War Team (The Beetle-Crushers) is also the Command unofficial champion boys' team. |
We warmly welcome the establishing of a sister unit to the north of us, in the form of the Junior Tradesmen's Regiment at Rhyl. We wish them a long and happy life and look forward in the future to much keen, but friendly, competition. We are also greatly indebted to Lt. Col. J.S.G. Walenn, M.B.E., M.C., and all ranks of the new Regiment, for presenting to us a splendid silver trophy to be known as the Rhyl Cup. This was recently competed for in the inter-platoon competition for which the Riches Cup was formerly awarded. Falaise Platoon were the worthy first winners, with Alamein Platoon as runners-up. |
The Summer half term intake was 99 strong and so we have reached a highest ever figure of 760, which is almost our maximum. |
