THE TALYLLYN RAILWAY
The Talyllyn Railway
PLEASE QUOTE REF: lead034
The Talyllyn Narrow Gauge Railway was constructed in 1865 mainly for the purpose of conveying the slates and slabs from the Bryneglwys and Cantrybedd Quarries situated near Abergynolwyn. Nowadays it has become a tourist attraction, particularly during the summer season. Thousands of passengers use the line, most of them for the sheer novelty of the experience. The scenery visible from the Railway is very varied and beautiful, embracing as it does mountains, rivers, waterfalls and lakes, giving a total impression of this area at its best.
The line is 2ft. 3ins. gauge, and the Company's first locomotive was ordered from the Whitehaven firm of Messrs. Fletcher Jennings & Co. This was the first order they had executed for North Wales, and also the first narrow gauge engine they had built with plate frames. She was delivered at Towyn on 24th September 1865. A second engine was delivered during the second half of 1866.
Mention should be made of the newly built museum at the Wharf Station, Towyn. Thousands visited it this season, and great praise has been paid to the Curator for the way the locomotives and smaller exhibits have been maintained. Public interest, and the work of the Talyllyn Railway Preservation Society, ensure that this delightful line will be open for the delight of generations of passengers yet to come.
