Canoeing on the Dysynni with Bird Rock and Cader Idris to the north.
by J/Sgt. Bone, "C" Company.
The Canoe Club was one of the first hobbies started when the Regiment was formed, and we have at present about forty members, and about thirty-five canoes of six different types. These range from heavy sea-going craft, which are mainly used for Adventure Training, to small Eskimo kyaks, which are the most difficult to use because of their extreme lightness.
The Club has to travel considerable distances to take part in races. Our furthest journey so far has been to Poole Harbour, but next year we hope to go even further afield. Although we have taken part in a great number of races, we have yet to win one outright, for we usually finish second or third.
During the dark evenings, the Club is divided into two parts, and we spend our time building and repairing the canoes ready for the summer season. This year we are concentrating upon building a fleet of first-class racing canoes. In summer the Club trains on the Dovey and Dysynni rivers, and also on the sea. Conditions are ideal for our purpose, and we enjoy these training sessions very much.
Two members of "C" Company, J/Gnr. Whyte and myself, have reached the Gold Award standard in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme. The Club is fortunate in having several promising young canoeists who will be with us for some time to come.
