Leader Magazine
WINTER 1961.
FOREWORD by Colonel J.F. LAKE, MC.
A great many events of interest have taken place since the publication of the Summer edition of the "Leader."
A visit from Brigadier Sir John Hunt, C.B.E., on July 26th, did much to engender enthusiasm for the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme. Our Summer Graduation Parade on August 4th was generally acknowledged to be the best so far; certainly the weather was kind to us and gave Junior Leaders the opportunity of showing off the Regiment in its best possible light to their parents and our Army Commander, Lieutenant General E.D. Howard-Vyse, C.B., C.B.E., M.C., who very kindly took the salute and gave away the prizes.
The Christmas Term started off in splendid style with our Regimental Shooting Teams winning first and second places in the Junior Leader Section of the Western Command Weapon Meeting. They also did extremely well in the Junior Falling Plate Competition, finishing as runners-up to the 1st Bn. Worcestershire Regiment. Their success was due in no small measure to Captain Jack Sheppard, his assistant instructors, and the boys themselves who gave up the last week of their Summer holidays to practise for the competition.
In the academic world we also got away to a good start with the publication of the G.C.E. results for the Summer Term. Out of the 100 subjects taken, 45 passes were achieved, three of which were at "A" level. I consider this a very promising start to the Regiment's entry into the G.C.E. field of Education and should encourage candidates to do even better this Christmas.
We have covered a lot of ground in the field of Sport this term. On the debit side, our Regimental Boxing team were defeated by the Junior Leaders Regiment (R.A.) by 34 points to 31 after a very spirited performance in which each Junior Leader gave of his very best. On the credit side, our Association Football team reached the semi-finals of the Army Junior Cup by defeating the present holders at Dover. Two Regimental Games Days have been held, one at Tonfanau on October 25th when we acted as hosts to the Gunner Junior Leader Regiment and one at Oswestry on October 28th, where we visited the Infantry Junior Leaders. The Regiment was represented by teams in Soccer, Rugger, Hockey, Cross Country Running, Basketball, Fencing and Shooting. Out of the sixteen matches played on the two days we had the satisfaction of winning fifteen and drawing one.
An outstanding event this term was the introduction of a new Inter-Platoon Competition for the Riches Cup held on November 1st. The competition is reported elsewhere in this issue, but I would like to add that it was a resounding success and all Platoons are to be congratulated on a first class performance.
This term has been one of further expansion and achievement in all spheres of training, education and sport. The Regiment is now nearing its numerical ceiling and can look forward to a period of stability, when its input of recruits balances its output each term. This will give us an opportunity to consolidate our gains and tackle with renewed enthusiasm and vigour our efforts to improve our standards still further.
