Leader Magazine
JULY 1961.
ATHLETICS NOTES.
At the time of writing the Regimental Team has had four matches this term, winning one and losing three. In the Team Triangular match against the R.A. and Infantry Junior Leaders we came third by two points to the Infantry and six to the R.A. In this match the high jumpers Tosdevine and Holmes had a good win as did the 4 x 440 team of Bertram, Buckley, Herbert and Stoten. Although Byrne had a fine run to win the mile individually, we only managed to gain second place as a team.
Another close match was that with H.M.S. Conway who beat us 157 points to 152. Although our runners had a good day, Tranter running 100 yards in 10.7 seconds, Herbert the 880 yards in 2 mins. 11.6 seconds, and Byrne the mile in 4 mins. 38 seconds, our field events had an off day and produced nothing like their best. However they will have another opportunity in the return match at the end of July.
A party of 20 went down to Aldershot for the Army Junior Individual Championships on 1st July. With the quickly rising standard of Athletics very obvious in the heats and early stages of events, the Regiment managed to achieve its share of places - J/L/Cpl. Byrne won the Junior Mile in 4 mins. 38 sec.; J/Sgt. Tosdevine came second in the Junior High jump with 5ft. 6ins.; J/Pte. Tranter came second in the Youth 100 yds. in 11 secs. and in the Youth 220 yds. in 24.8 secs.; J/Gnr Shaw came third in the 1500m Steeplechase in 4 mins. 54 secs. These were all very fine performances against keen opposition.
