Leader Magazine
JULY 1961.
FOREWORD by Colonel J.F. LAKE, MC.
Since the Spring Edition of this Regimental Magazine, the number of Junior Leaders under training has risen to nearly seven hundred, with the result that it has become necessary to change the organisation of Platoons within the Training Companies. This has been successfully carried out and now all Platoons are at the same strength and all have junior, intermediate, senior and continuation Junior Leaders. Permanent Staff and Junior Leaders are to be congratulated on the efficient and speedy manner they have built up the Esprit de Corps of their new Platoons.
As the Regiment enters the third year of its existence, let us take stock of our achievements. By the end of this term over 400 Junior Leaders will have graduated to the Regiment of their choice. It will be of interest to you all I am sure to know that ex junior Leaders of this Regiment are already serving with their Regiments in all parts of the world and I have had very good reports of their progress from Hong Kong, where the Reverend Horace McClelland, CF., is now firmly installed, and from Germany, where a number of our officer instructors are now serving. Practically without exception, ex Junior Leaders are proving their worth as reliable and efficient soldiers and a great many of them are already shouldering responsibility as young N.C.Os.
In the academic sphere the Regiment goes from strength to strength. Nine Junior Leaders have sat for G.C.E. "A" Level subjects and 62 Junior Leaders have sat G.C.E. "O" Level and results are now eagerly awaited.
Ex Junior C.S.M. Bradley received his Gold Award from the Duke of Edinburgh at Holyrood Palace, Edinburgh, on June 29th and two further Junior Leaders now await a Royal summons. I hope it won't be long before there is a steady stream of successful candidates coming forward.
Hobby and Club activities continue to thrive and our Regimental sports teams invariably set a high standard of endeavour and sportsmanship. It is encouraging to see so many Junior Leaders qualifying as Referees in Soccer, Rugger and Basketball. Not only will they be a great asset to this Regiment, but they will be extremely popular when they join their Parent Regiment or Corps.
At the end of this term over one hundred Junior Leaders are leaving the Regiment. To them I wish the best of luck and good fortune. I know they will prove their worth and willingly accept responsibility as N.C.Os. when promotion comes their way. To those Junior Leaders who return next term, may I commend the motto of the Outward Bound Sea School - "To Serve, To Strive and not to Yield". If we can succeed in living up to these ideals, the future of our Regiment is assured.
