Vol.3.No.3.                    November 1962
RHYL CUP.
On Wednesday November the Seventh, sixteen teams, representing patrols, one from each platoon, set out to compete for the Rhyl Cup.
From the very first team setting out, it was obvious that this was going to be a hard fought competition. The pace was brisk from the word go, and no time was wasted getting to and from checkpoints. The teams made their way out of the top of the camp after an inspection by the Adjutant and passed through the first checkpoint, which was manned by Lt. Peplow and Sgt. McHugh. They then made their way along the Regimental cross-country course up to the Commandant's house. After descending the hill, they turned left towards the Bailey Bridge. There they encountered their first aid problem, which varied from a broken pelvis to a fractured skull. After treating the patient, he was then transported across the Dysinni by assault craft. After this the teams made their way across Morfa flats to the initiative test, which was to get the patrol and an injured man across a deep ravine by using two telegraph poles, a rope, some iron stakes and a few toggle ropes. This was in fact harder than it looked and kept some teams wondering for quite some time. From here the teams went to the map reading checkpoint just before heading onto the beach. Whilst on the beach the teams received their radio problem before reaching the range. At the range the teams checked in, and had time for a breather and a glance at the scoreboard, before the final inspection, which was taken by Major Jones and CSM Ward, and the shooting. The standard of shooting as seen by the Weapon Training staff was reputed to have been some of the best seen on the range. The top mark for shooting was gained by Rhine platoon which was led by Junior Sergeant Skinner.
The first three places were gained by First: Alamein Platoon (C), Second: Minden Platoon (D), Third: Cambrai Platoon (D). The winning company was 'C' company with one thousand and twenty-one and a half points, followed by 'A' Company with one thousand and a half points.
The winning team was Alamein, who incidentally have had a first in the competition before, were led by Junior Sergeant Holmes. The other team members were: J/L Cpl Woodward (Radio), J/L Cpl Large, J/Tpr Crosthwaite, J/Gnr Geddes, J/Sig Richardson and J/Ptes Britton, Allen and Larmouth.
