ROCK CLIMBING IN THE SNOWDONIA RANGE.
On the evening of Friday 13th. July the Rock Climbing Club left the M.R.S. (No Joke) for the Snowdonia Range. The party consisted of five J/LDRS. and seven P/Staff.
On arrival at Llynogwen we unloaded all the kit from the T.C.V. and took it up the mountain to the campsite, by a large lake. We were soon settled in and having supper and were all in bed by eleven thirty.
Early on Saturday morning Cpt. Lloyd sounded reveille an by seven o'clock everybody was waiting at the cooking tent for breakfast. After we had eaten and washed up, we set off.
We reached the area we were to use. It was divided into three separate climbs and we took it in turns to do each one. The climbs completed we returned for lunch, which was excellently cooked by Mrs. Ainsworth. In the afternoon we did a climb which took nearly three hours and by tea-time we were dog-tired, and very hungry, although a couple of J/Ldrs. were still fit enough for a swim.
After tea we all went out for the evening, but returned later for a large supper, then turned in leaving the permanent Staff talking.
Sunday morning arrived to the smell of cooking by SGT. Thompson and SGT. McHugh. We then moved camps to Larberiss Pass to do the remainder of the climbing. We had a bite to eat before the afternoons climb. On arrival at the' climbing point we split up into groups of two or three to do our individual climbs. My lot fell with Lt., Pearce. We had to climb a chimney and then up a seventy-five foot face. During this Lt. Pearce and myself were shaking like leaves in the breeze and at times I felt like turning back, I think he did as well.
Having finished the climb, we returned to the T.C.V. for tea. Then it was back to Tonfanau, our minds still filled with the thrills and personal achievements of our first real rock climbing. You should try it.
