Reunion Report From Larry Smith

What a great weekend! The road in and out of Wales was Welsh Taliban free. Daffodils lined the route and with magnificent weather it was Here we go! Here we go! Once again former Junior Leaders, Permanent Staff and their wives and partners travelled from all parts of the United Kingdom to attend the annual reunion. I'm sure the majority will say it was "the best yet" and I agree it was superb!! The staff of the Myn-y-Mar Hotel were once again very helpful and they made sure that we were well catered for throughout the weekend. Well done to Helen and staff. Friday night was the usual meet and greet and allowed for a few "warmers into the bank". Not surprisingly there seems to be a growing trend of members turning up on the Thursday into Barmouth making the most of their visit to Wales. It was pleasing to see more newcomers at their first reunion. The Friday evening meal was a Carvery that was enjoyed by all.
What to do on the Saturday?? The Grand Prix? The Boat Race? The Cricket World Cup? England v Wales Football? or a trip to the camp? 20 decided to tour the camp. This was the best visit to the camp for a long time as there were no trains running due to track maintenance so members travelled by car and had more time to stroll around the camp, in glorious sunshine (Factor 50 was needed), and with photos from the past, we were able to pinpoint most places, including one or two Bedspaces. Rene Dee successfully climbed Cader Idris along with Richard Rothwell. They both hit the summit with Richard reaching the top after following the pony path route. Well Done chaps!
Members gathered in the dining area for the Annual AGM at 1700 hours. A short silence was observed by those attending in honour of those members who had sadly died in the past year; they were Geoffrey Ainsworth, Graeme Jackson, Ian McPherson, Tony Kimberley, Dave Bailey, Bert Malseed and John Wilson.
"We Will Remember Them"
Business was discussed, Herbies tie was commented on and the committee continue in office after a vote of thanks from the floor. The minutes have been posted on the website. It was agreed that the 2012 reunion would be held over the weekend 24th March 2012. Have you booked your rooms yet?
Seventy members attended the evening function, which included a sit down buffet, raffle and disco. The food was plentiful with a good selection and of good quality. Richard Abraham said Grace.
There was a toast to the Regiment by the President and a toast to the ladies proposed by Herbie Slaughter. The Disco was run by Rick and Ruth Wise. They were superb once again! This year they provided a slide display on a large screen of continuous black and white photos of Junior Leaders taken from the website. Terrific!! A "blind" raffle was conducted and a vote of thanks must go to Val Truelove and Ruth Hattersley for selling the tickets. The sum of £230 was raised. This will be split between our Webmaster Ken Hart and Combat Stress. The dance floor was alive with 60s music until midnight. We were then entertained in the main bar with a karaoke until the early hours. Unfortunately we then lost one hours sleep as the clocks went forward.
We were greeted on the Sunday morning with fine weather and sore heads. After a hearty breakfast members departed promising to return in 2012. Thanks to Mike Owsley for putting it all together, to Richard Abraham's great enthusiasm and dedication to the association throughout the year and to Ken Hart for running an excellent website on our behalf. To all those who couldn't make it due to ill health hurry up and get better and we will see you next year – it can't come soon enough.
