Towyn Outward Bound - Spring 1961.
I was placed on a course some time in the spring of 61 but fell off the trapeze bar on the assault course. I was taken back to Tonfanau and up to the MRS where the matron suggested 'another skiver' until she realised I was based at Tonfanau whereupon her attitude changed considerably and I got some treatment. After this I went back to Morfa Camp and attempted most things until the course went up to Lake Ogwen in Snowdonia when the Commandant, Brig. Charles Howard invalided me off the course. His decision at the time was upsetting but correct and when the final scheme was held the weather conditions were appalling and several attendees had to be rescued from the exercise area round Cader Idris. Fortunately, I was able to re-apply and so attended for a second time later in the year when the weather was perfect. I do not know what Howard's background was but he had 2 black labradors named Rookie and Rickie and, somehow, these dogs always signed in at every checkpoint. Howard was well known for having done the Snowdon Horseshoe twice in a day despite being retired. When I re-attended at Morfa, for our first session on the assault course, Howard came and made sure I managed the trapeze by talking me over it. I have a great deal of this respect for him but when I last enquired, he had died.
