Club instructors at Williams Farm, Ogven Valley, Snowdon
The aim of the club is, to give Junior Leaders valuable training in personal responsibility and individual initiative, and to bring out any latent mental qualities, necessary for physical endurance; also to provide a touch of danger, enabling them to feel a sensation of excitement and achievement.
Initially, new members are taught basic climbing techniques and the different uses of various knots, also the handling of climbing ropes. This is carried out on our nursery slopes, before proceeding on to more difficult climbs in Snowdon.
One or two weekends per term are spent climbing in the Snowdon area. On these occassions members are given the opportunity to lead others on climbs of a very difficult standard; this enables them to obtain full membership of the Army Mountaineering Association.
For the fist time the club has ventured further afield, and during the Easter recess spent five days cliff climbing in Cornwall. This proved to be an unusual experience inasmuch as we had the sea surging below us, instead of the usual rocks and boulders one sees in Snowdon.
Over the past twelve months, the club has spent a considerable sum in purchasing the most up to date equipment, in the form of climbing boots, anoraks, rucksacks, karabiniers, slings and waist loops, thus ensuring that all members are properly equipped.
Since the club was first formed, we have passed out some 20 members who are now capable of leading others on very difficult climbs. Though we lose some members each term through graduation, our club is still thriving at full strength.
We shall be very sorry to lose our club leader Capt. P.V. Cheesman MX, who has done so much to promote the success of the club and we take this opportunity to wish him the best of luck on posting to his regiment in August, 1965.
Sgt. G.H. AINSWORTH,
Adv Trg Wing.
