Leader Magazine
SUMMER 1965.
'C' COMPANY NOTES.
"C" COMPANY HEADQUARTERS
Probably the most important event in everyone's consideration was the departure of the workmen after nearly a year of constant turmoil and change. Nothing was certain; many a junior leader returned to his barrack room to find the roof gone, or the lights torn out or, worse still, the carpenters hammering as hard as they could. Nevertheless, forged in the dust and confusion, tempered in the misery and frustration and honed by the impossible task of maintaining a decent standard, the accommodation and our appreciation of it, have emerged like golden butterflies from their chrysallis. One more mighty effort by the Ministry of Public Works and Buildings and all will be ready, bright warm and weatherproof, for the final closure of the camp. It would need a Tennyson or a Burns (depending upon nationality) adequately to portray our sad feelings at the prospect of handing over all that we have come to love.
There have been many changes in the permanent staff as tours come to an end.
TUNISIA PLATOON
Since the last issue of the Leader, Tunisia Platoon has marched steadily forward (not literally of course). We have survived the dismal days of the "Great Work Service" which lasted for two terms and replaced everything except the walls of our huts - (they even provided space type air locks), and now, resplendent in our "all mod con" billets, we shall probably be closed down.
Our only great success in inter-platoon competitions has been runners-up in a Rhyl Cup Competition, but many individual members deserve mention for their Regimental activivies.
J/Sgt. Sidebottom, and J/Pte Sparshott have been working hard in the Gymnastics Hobby for the coming crop of summer displays in local towns. The Corps of drums with J/L/Cpl Morrison and J/Pte's Foster and Williams is also practising hard for these displays and Graduation Day as well.
J/Sgt Coverley and J/CSM Lawton were staunch members of the Canoe Hobby and achieved very high standards in many racing events.
J/Cpl Reece, who transferred into Tunisia, was a mainstay in the victorious company rugby side.
In the Social Centre, J/Pte Rimmer has helped in the organisation and running of many social events. He has also constructed a prize-winning boat in last year's Army Arts and Crafts Exhibition. This year J/Cpl Furber has a bedside table entered in the Crafts Section.
Last Xmas saw the departure of our "oldest" member J/Sig (Long Service) Deacon, a veteran member of the Corps of Drums.
Regimental Hockey has received active support from us, with J/Cpl Sweeney as team Captain and J/Bdr Simpson and J/Gnr Shepherd as regular members.
Parties of skiers went to Scotland and Norway earlier this year and the lucky Tunisians, J/CSM Lawton, J/CSM Roach and J/Sgt Sidebottom were amongst those who enjoyed an excellent holiday at Army expense.
During the company Xmas party our platoon maestro, "Meat" Cleaver, entertained us to his rendering of Washington Square, whilst the Platoon gave us their annual joke (something about "birds", I think).
Sgt (Single Side Band of) Hope has departed from us to Germany with the Menai Bridge Signals Challenge Shield still outstanding and we welcome Sgt Gibson, his replacement.
