Leader Magazine
SUMMER 1965.
FOREWORD by Colonel K.H.S. Wilson.
As is by now well known, Tonfanau Camp will close and the All Arms Junior Leaders' Regiment be disbanded in July, 1966. This regiment was formed as an overflow unit to deal with the larger numbers of Junior Leaders in certain age groups. Now that these have been catered for, and the Junior Leader entry to the army has reverted to its usual level, the permanent boys' units are able to accept the total numbers under training. The All Arms Junior Leaders' Regiment has therefore completed the task for which it was founded and has no further reason for existence. The unit has done a good job and the experience gained by training Junior Leaders of different arms together will prove to have been of value. During the period of run down the unit will of course continue to work at its usual level of efficiency.
The decision by the Ministry of Defence to close the camp was also not unexpected. Most of the buildings are clearly nearing the end of their useful life and becoming acceptably expensive to maintain. Although the loss of employment and custom which the locality will inevitably sustain is to be regretted, there can be no doubt that all these factors were carefully considered before the decision to close the camp was regretfully taken.
The work and play of the unit during the past year is fully described elsewhere in this magazine; I am sure that the next and final year of the unit's life will be completed no less successfully.
