SUMMER 1964.
RECRUIT COMPANY NOTES.
The unofficial crest of "R" Company is a sow's ear below a shining silken purse. Cynics have suggested it should be the rambling tentacles of an octopus; it may well become this if intakes do number 240 in the future. Perhaps this increase has been made to keep up with the improvements in accommodatlon and progress in training which have been made in the last year. If so, at the present rate of progress, future intakes will number a thousand!
In September, Major Stone departs to investigate, SIB-wise, the delights of Dusseldorf and we wish him and Mrs. Stone a pleasant tour. We welcome Captain Bacon to, in Pentagon parlance, "the hot seat" and wish him also a pleasant tour.
1 PLATOON
There have been several changes in the permanent staff of the Platoon. Lt. Barker left in January for an Air Dispatch course and was replaced by Lt. Stormer. Sgt. Payne moved to 3 Platoon in exchange for Sgt. Love. Sgt. Rawlins, who has been in the Platoon some considerable time, leaves at the end of July and we wish him and his wife a happy tour in B.A.O.R. Let it be noted that in the last two terms we have won the Champion Platoon Competition once, were runners up once and have had the best recruit twice!
2 PLATOON
At the end of the Spring term, Sgt. Gracie managed to complete the hat-trick by winning "R" Company Drill Shield for the third successive time. In April, Lt. Webb left for Malaysia and Lt. Shirlaw took over. Amongst the new intake, J/Sig. James achieved distinction by running for the Regimental Athletics team within four weeks o£ arrival. The whole Platoon climbed Cader Idris and J/Ldrs. Simpson, James, Medland and Sharrock liked it so much that, from Menai, they reached the top of Snowdon, although the method of travel is hotly debated. Also hotly debated or rather queried are Sgt. Tull's "elephant" jokes which, to avoid active audience reaction, are now appearing in written form.
3 PLATOON
After settling down in our new building and spending all winter trying to keep fires going, we found that J/Pte. Thompson's remark about being vaguely interested in Boxing was the understatement of 1963: he is one of the few to have represented the Regiment whilst in "R" Company. During the Easter term. Soccer was our main accomplishment and after only two matches in the inter-Platoon competition, which we won, we had scored 17 goals with one against us. We missed the Drill Shield by .1 of a mark but, coming top in Education and Adventure Training, we won the Champion Platoon Trophy which, for the first time, was presented at the Graduation Day Prize Giving. This term's Platoon is off to a good start and as we are 50% Scottish, we see no reason why the Trophy should not remain with us.
4 PLATOON
Although the most newly created, we claim confidently to be the most progressive Platoon in the Company. After all, who started the wall badges, first reduced the height of the grass and as for internal fittings...! It is rumoured that Sgt. Deasey is patenting a new deep-layer polish, though this may be only a touch of the Blarney. With Lt. Smith as Platoon Commander and Sgt. Smith as Drill Sergeant, the names in each new intake are scanned anxiously for the one thing that could disrupt the smooth working of the Platoon!
