Leader Magazine
SUMMER 1964.
FOREWORD by Colonel T. Lash, OBE.
This is the first edition of 'The Leader' to cover a full year's activities and the second to appear in its present form. I will leave to the Editor the task of introducing the contents and will only comment on certain aspects of the activities in the past year.
I would like to congratulate our Canoeists, who filled the second, third and fourth positions in the Army Championships at Worcester this year. The majority of the eleven long distance races in which they have participated are organised by civilians, and the standards are high: it is quite usual for Olympic paddlers to be racing in these events, and also the teams have acquitted themselves extremely well throughout. Since they also won the Army Junior Championship at Walton-on-Thames their future prospects should be bright.
Our boxers have also been very successful. Not only were they runners-up in the Army Junior Team Championship but can number among themselves several Army and I.S.B.A. Colours, and one A.B.A. Junior runner-up.
Praise is due too to our Fencing team, who repeated last year's achievement of being Western Command Champions and runners-up in the Army Finals at Aldershot.
A new hobby, Scottish Country Dancing, has made its appearance and three public performances have already been given, including an appearance at the Midland Highland Games.
Last year we relinquished the Army Arts and Crafts Junior Challenge Shield, but one hundred and ten exhibits covering both Junior and Adult Sections have been sent down to Earls Court this year in an effort to regain the trophy.
The education results at GCE 'O' level last year were 72 subject passes, indicating a high standard of attainment. This term there about one hundred and fifty subject entries, though the results will not be available in time for publication here.
Reading through the magazine, one obtains a vivid impression of the effort and enthusiam brought by all ranks to the many Regimental activities described, and I am also glad to see that the literary and artistic talent of the unit has responded so vigorously to assist the Editor in the production of a magazine which I feel sure everyone will enjoy.
