Leader Magazine
SUMMER 1962.
AS OTHERS SEE US.
The following is extracted from an article, "N.C.O's Training in Wales", which appeared in the April edition of the Cadet Journal and Gazette. It is reprinted with the permission of its author Wingate Harrison.
Overshadowed by Beacon Hill, three miles from Towyn in Merioneth, lies the large straggling Tonfanau Camp. During the last war, it was one of the training quarters for the Artillery and many soldiers from all over the British Isles passed through it. A few years ago, this camp was closed down leaving deserted barracks and huts and rusted barbed wire on the beach; a sad, ugly eyesore in a beautiful setting. However, a fine new road and Bailey Bridge, linking the camp with Towyn, proved a boon and a blessing to farmers and residents in the vicinity. Now all is changed, for two years ago it sprang to life again as headquarters of an All Arms Junior Leaders' Regiment.
So impressive is the keenness, enthusiasm and discipline of these boys and the same keenness and enthusiasm shown by their officers, who are seconded from their regiments for a two-year sojourn here, that, without doubt, this most worthwhile effort of the British Army should be brought to the notice of all and sundry. One feels sure that many parents would wish their sons to have this initial training before joining the Regular Army.
The achievement and progress of this camp since its opening only two years ago, with a nucleus of 200 boys, is quite extraordinary. There are now about 700 Junior Leaders, and about fifty regular officers give all their knowledge and energy to their training and moral welfare. Over 1,000 boys have entered this Regiment and more than three hundred have graduated to the regiments of their choice and are already serving with the Regular Army in all parts of the world.
