J/L/Cpl. Backhouse, 'A' Company receives the Army Junior Soccer Cup.
SOCCER
The second half of the soccer season began in an atmosphere of mixed feelings. The Regiment had fulfilled its early promise by winning the Army Cup (A.A.J.L.R. 3, R.A.J.L.R. 2), but as the Christmas output included seven of this victorious team, the Club was severely weakened.
A concentrated effort by Club members and P.S. has produced a reasonable side. The Regiment have played five games since Christmas, of these they have won one, lost one and drawn three. The most interesting of these was the game against Barmouth Youth XI in the second round of the Mid-Wales Youth Cup Competition, when the Regiment, after trailing behind twice, emerged the victors 5 - 4. At the time of going to press, we are anxiously awaiting the semi-finals to be played against Aberystwyth Juniors.
In conclusion I should like to take this opportunity of wishing good luck to members who will be leaving at the end of term, and to those remaining, remind them of the responsibilities they must face in the coming season. They should aim at retaining the Army Cup. This aim will be fulfilled if they enter into all aspects of training with vigour and enthusiasm.
XL CLUB NOTES
Although all but six of last term's 1st XV graduated at Christmas, we have been able to field a team which has won as many matches as it has lost.
A poor display against a much improved Infantry Junior Leaders team at Oswestry led to a 15 - 3 defeat and our quick exit from the Army Cup. Some of our damaged reputation was recovered, when at Tonfanau we played with more spirit. In a close game Oswestry gained the winning try from a break away after we have been pressing for most of the second half, to win by 9 pts. to 6.
The 2nd XV have had few fixtures, but have played well and with fire, although many players have moved into the 1st XV.
Highlight of the term was a coach trip to Cardiff to see Scotland beat Wales. All the 1st XV enjoyed the match, and everyone learned something of value from the game.
All XL Club members would like to thank the Permanent Staff who have been kind enough to teach us youngsters some of the tricks which they have picked up by experience.
As far as results are concerned, this has been an average term, but we hope to gain a consolation prize by winning the Western Command Knockout Cup at the end of term. We play the Infantry Junior Leaders (yet again) in the first round, and are optimistic about our chances.
The teams' record this term:
   1st XV   -   P8     W4     L4     F46     A36
 2nd XV   -   P3   W2   L1   F17   A11
J/Cpl. DONALD, 'B' Coy.
BOXING NOTES
The visit of the Regimental Boxing Team to the Army Junior Championships was a happy and successful one, and victories apart, it was very pleasing that none of our boxers suffered a knock-out. In every case, when the moment of elimination came, it was on a points decision.
Nine of our boxers reached the Quarter-finals of the Championships. They were : J/Pte. Mitchell, J/Pte. Lyons and J/L/Cpl. Stapleton of 'A' Company, J/L/Cpl. Barnes, J/Pte. Duncan and J/Bdr. Weller of 'B' Company, J/L/Cpl. Ellison and J/Sig. Rogers of 'C' Company, J/Cpl. Hornby of 'D' Company.
Of these, Hornby reached the semi-final, from which he had to retire because of a damaged hand, and Stapleton and Rogers reached the final. To the great excitement of our contingent both our finalists won on points to become champions.
The Army Champions, Stapleton and Rogers were scheduled to fight in the I.S.B.A. Championships, but unfortunately Rogers caught influenza, and had to miss the fight. Stapleton proved he was fully fit and boxed to another points victory to add the I.S.B.A. title to our successes. He now goes on to the quarter-final of the A.B.A. Championships in March at Crookham.
BASKETBALL
After the Christmas departures the Regimental team took on a new look but results have been satisfactory. The new players are picking up the skills of the game quite well and the forwards of the Regimental team are working on a splendid and elaborate American move known as the Wisconsin Criss Cross, guaranteed to shatter the opposition.
We were very pleased to be one of the teams to keep the Regimental Flag flying when the Infantry Junior Leaders visited Tonfanau. Results:
 v.   Llanidloes   Away   lost   29   -   43
 v.   Towyn G.S.   Home   won   32   -   18
 v.   Inf. J/L's   Home   won   18   -   16
HOCKEY
This has been a fine season for the Regimental XI. The only defeat this term unfortunately occurred in the semi-final of the Army Junior Cup when the Regiment lost to the R.A.C. Junior Leaders Regiment at Bovington Camp by one goal to nil. They were also defeated by the weather, for on the day prior to this match the team was to be flown to Dorset by the R.A.F. but near gale force winds put paid to what would have been a novel experience.
J/CSM Banham ('A' Company) has once again captained the side and his enthusiasm on and off the pitch has helped to make the team the success it is.
Regimental Colours have to date been awarded to : J/Cpl. Dutton, 'A' Coy, J/Tpr. Marston, 'B' Coy, J/L/Cpls. Purvis, Cosby and Heath, 'D' Coy and J/Tprs. Dack and Reader, 'D' Coy.
The team has played a number of matches, including some new fixtures, at the time of going to press we have yet to play the Boys' School, Oswestry, and Lindisfarne College, both unknown quantities. It is hoped to take the complete Hobby section to watch the international match between Wales and Ireland at Ruthin on Saturday, March 17th.

It is hoped that in the near future the Hockey Association will confirm the standards for Hockey as an integral part of the Duke of Edinburgh's Scheme.
We are looking forward to next season with interest for both inside forwards J/Pte. Smith, J.A., 'C' Company and J/Sig. Browning, 'A' Company will still be here and will form an excellent basis for next year's forward line.
