My hobby, unlike most, is both constructive and also a recognised sport which encourages competition. It takes skill both to make an arrow and to fire it accurately.
When we first join this hobby we make six arrows, and after making these we are shown how to fire an arrow. To make an arrow we start with a piece of dowel rod and then add a pile or point on to the end. Then we add a knock on the other end; this is made of plastic and has a groove in the top where it is fitted on to the bowstring. When at this stage, we fix on three fletchings which are made of goose or turkey feather. At this stage we paint the arrow in a design chosen ourselves. This is usually limited to an inch or two along the shaft as we don't like arrows to look like Indian war lances. After each coat we sandpaper it down so the arrow will be smooth and not affected in flight. The arrow is now complete.
In our hobby we are unable at present to arrange a shoot with other clubs but to combat this the instructors have devised a shooting ladder and at the top is the Club's best shot. We can also qualify for the Duke of Edinburgh's Award.
In the year and a half I have been in this hobby I have never been bored and I will most certainly keep it up as my hobby when I leave the Regiment this term as I believe it is the best hobby I can ever hope to find.
