The Junior Team Boxing Championships: J/Cpl. Plowright, 'D' Coy, in action.
BOXING
In the latter part of September, a Novices' Boxing Competition was held in the Assembly Hall, to assist in finding a team of boxers to represent the Regiment in the Army Junior Team Boxing Championships. Following upon this event, which provided the spectators, and some of the participants, with some lively entertainment, the Boxing Hobby was opened on October 2nd. Training for the match against the Junior Leaders' Regiment, Royal Artillery, began in earnest. The match was to consist of twenty-three bouts, in three different classes.
As training progressed it became clear that we should not be able to enter boxers in two of the classes, and when the night of the match came, we had to concede two walk-overs. In spite of this disadvantage a very exciting match ensued, with the final result in doubt until very near to end. Eventually our opponents were successful, but our boxers put up a very creditable performance in winning ten of the twenty-three bouts.
It is difficult to highlight any of the bouts, as they all had their own special incidents, but the performance of J/Pte. Duncan must be regarded as the best of the match. Duncan was matched against a reigning Army Junior Champion and even though put down in the second round, he fought back magnificently and was unlucky to lose a very close contest.
Luckily the majority of our team will be with us next year to form a nucleus of a team which should be very difficult to beat.
ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL
The Regimental Soccer team did not get off to a good start at the beginning of the term, but practice, and the services of C.S.M.I. Farr as coach, have brought about a very great improvement. This was amply demonstrated when the team travelled to Dover for the 1st Round of the Army Junior Cup, and defeated the Junior Leaders Regiment, Royal Engineers, by three goals to one. This victory was particularly significant as our opponents were the Cup-holders, and the team which eliminated us last year.
An interesting match was played against the R.A.F. Cosford Junior team, who are R.A.F. Junior Champions. We lost by four goals to seven, but valuable experience was gained, which we hope will assist our further progress in the Army Cup.
RUGBY
The XL Club has had quite a good season to date, but a problem looms, for the majority of the 1st XV pass out at the end of this term. Replacements will be needed for the Army Cup team next year, to keep up our record of always getting as far as the semi-finals.
Amongst the matches played, victories have been gained over the Junior Leaders Regiment, Royal Artillery, by twelve points to nil, and over the Infantry Junior Leaders Battalion, by twelve points to five.
BASKETBALL
The first match of the season was played during the visit of the Royal Artillery Junior Leaders. Under the captaincy of J/C.S.M. Taylor, we registered a win by twenty-four points to ten. J/Tpr. Kendrick, after a disappointing start, hit form in the second half and scored sixteen of the team's points.
A Company knock-out competition has been played and in the final 'C' Company defeated 'A' Company by forty-eight points to sixteen.
CROSS-COUNTRY RUNNING
Against both the Junior Leaders Regiment Royal Artillery and the Infantry Junior Leaders Battalion we gained satisfying victories with comfortable points margins. J/Sig. Herbert was the individual winner of both these matches and claims a course record at Oswestry.
If the spirit of enthusiasm and determination of all the members of the Club is anything to go by, then we look forward to a continuation of success, and, we hope, bright prospects for the Army Championships.
HOCKEY
The first round of the Army Junior Cup is eagerly awaited. We have been drawn against the Junior Leaders Battalion, R.A.S.C., and the match is to be played in January. In preparation for this we hope to hold games every Wednesday and Saturday afternoon, and tactics and training film are studied during hobbies periods.
J/C.S.M. Banham, 'A' Company, is the Team Captain, and colours have been awarded to him and to J/Tpr. Marston and J/Gnr. Vickery.
