Leader Magazine
JULY 1961.
THE CORPS OF DRUMS IN LONDON.
On Monday, 5th June at about 6.0 p.m., forty-four members of the Corps of Drums arrived at Earls Court to take part in the Royal Tournament.
The first thing we noticed on entering the building was its size. It was divided into two parts, one for the spectators and the other for the participants. The arena was covered in a thick layer of wood shavings which made a surface quite different from anything we had marched on before.
We talked and walked around for a while until we were told to get ready to go on. When we paraded to go out, under Drum Major Perris and Junior Lance Corporal Norton, I think everyone was pretty nervous, but we soon settled down when we got our teeth into it. We did the same display we had done for the Open Day at Tonfanau, and the twenty minutes seemed to fly past. We were soon marching off to a big round of applause, very hot and sticky due to the enormous electric lights.
After our display we packed our kit and were then allowed to go and watch the rest of the show. This went off very well and the Household Cavalry and the Royal Horse Artillery put up an excellent display, which we later heard was shown on television.
We all came away from Earls Court with the satisfaction of knowing that we had represented the Regiment at a Royal Tournament.
