DECEMBER 1960.
MODEL AEROPLANE CLUB.
We have, during the past weeks, seen a spreading of wings above the Morfa Flats, the wings belonging to models of the Model Aero Club.
The club now has 26 active modellers, half of whom have taken up aero modelling since their arrival here. The results of their labours have been encouraging, and great success has been achieved by J/Ldrs Christopher and Veti, whose models flew very well.
The types of model under construction are gliders, free flight power models, control liners, and the ultimate in aero modelling, the radio controlled craft.
The gliders are the perfect introduction to the hobby as they are easy to construct, yet flight performance very much depends on workmanship and finish. The glider is towed into the air kite-fashion, and then cast adrift to circle lazily in the air.
Introduction to the free flight power is via the "Veron Cardinal". A successful beginners' model. Besides helping towards Bronze and Silver Awards, pursuing it keeps its builder pretty fit! After this comes the world of howling wires, with the control liners, or the sedate atmosphere of radio-control.
Aero-modelling demands a flair for many things. The ability to understand the principles of flight is quite essential, and great patience is also needed.
In the future we hope to show films and take part in visits and competitions.
