Leader Magazine
Vol.3.No.2.                    July 1962
GOLD AWARD.
Although feared and shunned by many people, Duke of Edinburgh's Gold Expedition is not as hard as Silver, but both have one thing in common, "BLISTERS". I was still suffering at the time of writing.
On the first day out the group walked from eleven a.m. to five p.m. uphill; then we camped in a pleasant valley by a small stream, some trees and sheep. After pitching tents we went for a walk to do special study and ended up in a peat bog, so much for Howarth's map-reading.
The second day was much the same as the first, more hills, more sheep, more blisters. I keep mentioning sheep because most of our 'Compo' consisted of "Mutton Scotch Style" and at the end of the second day, all we could say was "MA-A-A". The walk on the third day was quite pleasant, mostly downhill, and when we halted for dinner we washed our feet in a stream which we found out after, was used for washing sheep. That same evening we were brought fresh rations, steak, eggs, bacon, sausages, fruit and much more so we ate well that night.
On the fourth morning, after climbing a very nasty hill we walked six miles to the embussing point where a cold dinner was eaten while waiting for the truck (T.C.V.). We were glad to be finished but it was something which when we think back, will always provide laughs, and memories and also a certain feeling of achievement.
